Purpose : General
Aims/Objectives/Mission : SDS is a Non Government Voluntary organization established in 1987 in the town of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It started as a developmental organization helping to improve the living conditions in the city’ s slu. It recently extended its programme to include the rural areas of Villupuram & cuddalore. District and to focus on creating awareness among poor people, of their rights and the ways of asserting them. The organization is also motivating young people to get involved in the process of training, which will lead to self initiation and open new opportunities for active participation in local communities. The overall objectives of the organization is to help and empower the under – privileged and marginalized groups to develop human rights, awareness of their political economic and social rights and provide guidance in safeguarding their rights. The SDS has comprehensive programme for vocational training and economic and social support in order to equip the people of the slums with skill to enable them to cross class and economic barriers. It also campaigns on behalf of the under – privileged to secure government benefits the minority communities.
